The Theme of Sylvia Plath’s “Mirror”
The poem Mirror written by Sylvia consists of nine-line verse paragraphs. The theme of this poem focuses on the reality of the aging process. The mirror boasts about its remarkable trait to reflect everything the way it is. Sylvia has also introduced the lake in the poem which is also like a mirror but also tends to highlight the agitation and tears of a woman who is experiencing and watching as she grow old.
So the point of Sylvia in this poem is told from the mirror hung on the wall. Mirror poem basically covers the different dimensions of human nature, life, beauty, death and reflecting back the truth. As the poem reflects truth in terms of human nature so does the mirror reflects reality and conveys truth to the woman who sees it every day. The mirror is objective about every observation it makes about a woman. The nature of a mirror is simple as it can have no biases. As per the first few lines of the poem, the mirror has explained itself as true to its nature, unprejudiced and non-judgmental. It has given an overall frank description of itself.
In explaining itself, the mirror sounds a little arrogant as it praises itself for not misguiding anyone and giving real description. The mirror is never judgmental about anyone. It’s the people who judge themselves after seeing themselves in the mirror. Mirror is of the opinion that seeing in mirror sometimes makes the women forget her inner self.
The hardest truth for a woman to absorb while looking at the mirror is her growing age. The growing age is the biggest truth of life. mirror clearly tells the woman about her growing age. The mirror tells that the woman keeps looking into the mirror and gets depressed knowing that her death is getting closer and closer.
